STEP

USP Codes are listed in brackets by the 2003 USP code followed by the 2015 USP code (e.g. [QB><Q]).

STEP courses are housed within the Learning Resource Network (LeaRN) Program and comprise first-year and academic success courses aimed at supporting students in college research, written and professional communication, major and career exploration, and general transition strategies. STEP courses are often embedded in first-year programs including Fall Bridge, First-Year Experience, First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), and First-Year Seminars.

  • STEP 1000 - Culture and Community


    Max Credit 3

    Have you ever been curious about the cultures that underlie your passions? In this class, we will study the world around you and the cultures that make up our play, work, relationships, and sense of self. Whatever your passions are - stories, natural environment, activism, food, film, or history - you can find a place for it in Culture & Community. The course will begin with an exploration of pressing topics, then transition into researching contemporary issues and problems-largely be determined by student interest. Our course will culminate with individual multi-modal research projects where you put your cultural literacy and research skills to the test.

  • STEP 1060 - College Athletics and Society


    Credits: 3
    This course will examine the unique relationship between intercollegiate athletics and higher education, as well as intersections that occur with gender, politics, and race.

  • STEP 1102 - Step Into College


    Credits: 1
    Helps students interact with UW campus resources, staff, and faculty; learn about resources for academic support and wellness; and explore academic and co-curricular opportunities for students’ professional and personal interests.


    Prerequisite: Freshman or sophomore class standing.
  • STEP 1105 - Academic Success Skills


    Credits: 1-2
    Designed to provide students the necessary skill set to succeed at the University and beyond. Skills covered include time management, learning styles, note taking, self-motivation and more.


  • STEP 3000 - Leadership in SI


    Credits: 1
    Max Credit 6

    Focuses on theoretical perspectives of group tutoring and peer leadership, best practices in supplemental instruction, and student reflection. Will strengthen leadership knowledge and skills and introduce effective methods for group facilitation and SI curriculum. Prerequisites: closed to general enrollment.


  • STEP 3102 - Non-Traditional Student’s Guide to College and Career


    Credits: 3.0

    STEP 3102 is designed to support Adult Learners (typically 24+), transfer, distance, and other “non-traditional” students (i.e. full time employees/part time students seeking a degree, students with children, students returning to college after a significant gap in enrollment, etc.). This course will provide skills which equip you to interact with UW campus resources, staff, and faculty; to learn about academic support and wellness; to explore academic and co-curricular opportunities while considering busy lives; to explore career pathways and how to connect college to career; and to encourage personal reflection of how current college experiences will affect your future decision making and career success.


  • STEP 4000 - Special Problems in Academic Leadership: Motivation & Mindset

    This advanced leadership course will help tutors & Supplemental Instruction Leaders who have 1 semester or more of experience dig into enhancing adult motivation to learn and explore how to teach students how to learn. Instructor permission required.


    Prerequisite: STEP 3000 or instructor approval.
  • UWYO 4800 - UWYO 4800 | McNair Research Design

    McNair Scholars learn about research design and ethics by developing a plan for an independent research project. 


    Prerequisite: Must be a McNair Scholar
  • UWYO 4900 - UWYO 4900 | McNair Research and Graduate School Prep


    Credits: 3

    This course will provide McNair Scholars instruction on how to conduct research, summarize findings in written and oral ways, and gain preparation for graduate school. 


    Prerequisite: Must be a McNair Scholar
