Energy and Petroleum Engineering, M.Eng.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Degree Programs

The program, with an initial three specialization options in energy-related disciplines (Energy, Advanced Drilling, Data Analytics & Blockchain) is a direct response to the high demand of the Energy and Petroleum industry worldwide to employ graduates with these skills.

Energy and Petroleum Engineering M.Eng. Students

The Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering offers a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree in Energy and Petroleum Engineering with three specialization areas: (1) Energy Engineering, (2) Advanced Drilling Engineering, (3) Data Analytics and Blockchain Technology. This course-based program can be taken on campus or through Distance Delivery Mode (DDM), or a combination of both.

The goal of the M.Eng. program is to prepare students for leadership roles in the energy industry. The program develops students’ knowledge and skills in strategic areas and prepares them to take on more advanced roles during the energy transition.

All incoming M.Eng. students will be assigned an adviser upon their arrival depending on their chosen specialization. Academic advisors review and approve the students’ course load to ensure it aligns with their degree requirements and career goals.

To remain a graduate student in the M.Eng. program, students must retain a 3.0 GPA.

Course Requirements

The M.Eng. requires at least 30 credit hours of coursework. Students will need to complete 30 credits (typically, 10 courses of 3 credits each) to graduate. Students with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering shall select a minimum of four (4) specialized courses from a list of core courses under each discipline and the remaining courses can be taken as technical electives in the department or from other programs across campus. Students with other engineering or related science backgrounds will be required to take graduate courses in Petroleum Engineering as electives in addition to the core courses in their specialized area. In some cases, and, if one without a prior degree in petroleum engineering, provides adequate evidence of past training or industry experience in the petroleum industry, the number of petroleum engineering electives may be reduced to allow for more courses in the specialized discipline.

Program of Study Requirements

All Petroleum Engineering graduate students must complete their Program of Study worksheet at the beginning of their second academic year of study or 3rd semester of enrollment. Students must have a Program of Study and a Committee on file with the Office of the Registrar. If at any time students need to make changes to their approved program of study, they must submit a Request for Change in Graduate Program form. https://www.uwyo.edu/registrar/graduate-students/program-study.html

Graduate Student Regulations and Policies
