The UW Intensive English Program (IEP) is a 16-week academic English course that runs during the fall and spring semesters. An eight-week summer session is also available. Averaging 18-20 hours of in-person instruction per week, students take up to three classes daily. The program is designed to boost English language proficiency and American cultural awareness so that students can successfully pursue degrees at the University of Wyoming.
Our Mission
The Intensive English Program at the University of Wyoming provides an immersive, focused, and supportive learning environment for students who seek to improve their English language skills and pursue success in future academic and career paths.
UW’s dedicated, professional IEP instructors hold a master’s or doctoral degree and are certified to teach English as a foreign language.
Full-time IEP students will study on the F-1 visa. Part-time IEP students can study on the F-2 visa.
Courses
The IEP has four levels of instruction: Beginner, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, and Upper-intermediate. Levels are based on the incoming student’s English skills, experience, and placement testing. Daily schedules for all levels include:
- Reading & Vocabulary - college vocabulary, reading strategies, and study skills.
- Listening & Speaking - pronunciation, discussion, audio-visual comprehension, note-taking skills, and academic presentations.
- Integrated Skills - academic writing, reading, and speaking combined; focusing on important global topics.
- Academic Writing - a crucial component of the UW IEP, and all classes incorporate writing skills every day.
Accelerator Program
Some students with a higher level of English proficiency will qualify for the UW Accelerator Program. This program allows students to take courses toward their degree/major while also talking IEP classes to meet full university language proficiency requirements.
