English, Creative Writing Concentration, B.A.

This concentration integrates literary study with a robust sequence of creative writing workshop courses. Students study published texts, and practice the creation and development of individual work in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid forms.

Degree Requirements


At least 21 of the 36 credit hours must be upper division (3000-level or higher).

This degree requires that The University Studies Program 2015 requirements are met before graduation. Some of the courses required for this major fulfill USP requirements, but not all. Students should check their degree evaluations and consult with their assigned academic advisor to discuss their specific course plan.

Creative Writing Methods Course


Expanding the Canon Classes - 6 credit hours


A full list of courses that fulfill the Expanding the Canon requirements will be published each semester; generally speaking, these courses will cover topics related to racial diversity, global literatures, gender, sexuality, or disability studies. Example: ENGL 3330  , ENGL 3710  , ENGL 4450  , ENGL 4455  , ENGL 4460  , ENGL 4470  , ENGL 4640  , ENGL 4830  

Advanced Workshop - 6 credit hours


Take two sections of CW 4050 : Writer’s Workshop
