A Master of Science in Teaching (MST) offers graduates an opportunity to gain a variety of experiences, develop deeper knowledge in various fields, and build professional networks across a range of career paths.

The MST program empowers students to design individualized, interdisciplinary degree paths to achieve their personal and professional goals. Core courses blend knowledge and methods from various fields, fostering a comprehensive approach to critical thinking and problem-solving.

Mission: To deepen understanding of select STEM concepts and environments that support teaching and learning student’s selected STEM content.
What: A self-directed masters degree program designed individually based on the student’s interests and needs for their career.
For Whom?: Current K-12 teachers and/or non-traditional/informal educators.
Why?: The content courses can be used as professional development towards meeting the federal definition of a “highly qualified” teacher or educator.

SMTC Student Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the MST degree program, a student will be able to:

  • Engage in educational research to transform STEM instruction.
  • Design and implement a research project that asks and answers a question using appropriate materials, concepts and methods, and ethical practices, and
  • Effectively communicate all aspects of the research project in both oral and written forms.
  • Use professional and academic standards to ensure high-quality interdisciplinary instruction (i.e., place-based, culturally relevant, student centered, and/or inclusive instruction) to maximize learning for all students.
  • Engage in scientific discourse and scientific thinking as active participants in communities of practice.

Degree Requirements


30 credits are required that include:

  • 18 credits in selected STEM concentration,
  • 6 credits of appropriate graduate level pedagogy/education courses,
  • 4 credits of research methodology (NASC 5670),
  • 2 credits Plan B Research (NASC 5961) that is supported by Committee Chair, and
  • Completion of a Plan B (non-thesis project) or Plan A Thesis.

In collaboration with your initial advisor, students will create a program of study 18 credits with STEM concentration.

  • Writing Sample in response to three provided questions
  • Portfolio in response to two provided questions. Includes evidence that supports the potential success of the candidate as a graduate student
  • Official Transcripts from all Institutions attended and Bachelor Degree conferring institution
  • Three Letters of Recommendation including a letter from the applicant’s supervisor and two other colleagues.
  • 3.0 undergraduate grade point average; provisional admission with a lesser GPA only with consent from Academic Affairs
Graduate Assistantships and Scholarships

The SMTC has scholarships and graduate assistantships available for graduates accepted for the above Master’s degree programs.  Scholarships  cover  partial  to  full  tuition  for  current  Wyoming  teachers  for  all  SMTC  programs.  More information will be shared upon admission and acceptance.
