This concurrent major equips students with practical computing skills and domain expertise so that they can analyze real-world problems, design and implement computer-based solutions and collaborate and communicate with diverse groups. Graduates will be able to solve problems in a wide range of settings using applied computing.

General Requirements

  • Total credits (college requirement): 120
  • 3000-level or above credits (university requirement): 42
  • Fulfillment of University Studies Program (consult advisor)
  • Fulfillment of major requirements, track requirements, contemporary society, and career electives

University Studies Program

This degree requires that The University Studies Program 2015  requirements are met before graduation. Some of the courses required for this major fulfill USP requirements, but not all. Students should check their degree evaluations and consult with their assigned academic advisor to discuss their specific course plan.

Applied Computing Concurrent Major Core (18 credits)

Applied Computing Concurrent Major Electives (15 credits)

Students may select electives from any degree program, provided the courses include significant applied computing content. Examples include courses that focus on data science, cybersecurity, software development, geospatial technologies, or data visualization and storytelling, data analysis and modeling, software applications, tools and methods; digital automation and efficiency; digital communication and collaboration and domain-specific computing applications.

Some elective courses may have prerequisites or be restricted to students in specific majors. Some elective courses may also fulfill requirements in a student’s primary degree program.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult both the Applied Computing academic advisor and their primary program academic advisor to ensure appropriate course selection and degree progress.

Experiential Learning Requirement (3 credits)

An Approved Major in Any Discipline

The Applied Computing concurrent major is earned alongside another degree. All undergraduate students enrolled in the Applied Computing concurrent major must complete an approved baccalaureate degree in any other discipline. Students should consult both their primary and Applied Computing academic advisors to identify courses that may fulfill requirements for both degrees and determine prerequisites and course sequencing. For example, a required computing application course in the student’s primary program may count as an applied computing elective. This collaboration helps ensure timely degree progress and minimizes the accumulation of unnecessary credits
