About

Training Tomorrow’s Physicians for Wyoming and Beyond

If you’re considering a career in medicine, you should know about the vital role the University of Wyoming plays in training primary care physicians who serve communities across our state and the Mountain West region.

The Wyoming Legislature established two accredited family medicine residency programs-located in Casper and Cheyenne-to address a critical need: ensuring Wyoming has broadly trained primary care physicians ready to serve both urban and rural communities. Together, these university-administered, community-hospital based programs train up to 42 resident physicians at any given time, with 14 residents in each year of the three-year program.

Our Resident and Fellowship Programs

Operating since 1976 in partnership with Wyoming Medical Center, the Casper program offers comprehensive training through the Educational Health Center of Wyoming. What makes this program particularly innovative is its Rural Training Track-a partnership with Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis that gives up to three residents each year immersive, hands-on experience in rural practice. Casper is also home to Wyoming’s only Geriatric Fellowship, training specialized physicians to care for our state’s aging population. Active since 1980 and affiliated with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, the Cheyenne program also utilizes the Educational Health Center of Wyoming and maintains a strong partnership with the Veterans Administration Hospital, providing residents with diverse patient care experiences.

We are pleased to offer a PGY1 Pharmacy residency program.  Major areas of emphasis for the pharmacy residency include ambulatory care and teaching, and we are one of the few residencies based almost entirely in a clinic setting. The pharmacy resident works collaboratively with faculty physicians, medical residents, and other healthcare providers.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Both centers maintain a 1:4 faculty-to-resident ratio and feature comprehensive clinical and educational facilities, including modern examining rooms, treatment facilities, x-ray capabilities, laboratories, research areas, learning resource centers, and auditoriums-everything needed to prepare the next generation of physicians.

A Focus on Wyoming’s Unique Healthcare Needs

What sets these programs apart is their intentional focus on preparing physicians for rural practice and the distinctive aspects of healthcare delivery in Wyoming. As you explore your path toward medical school and beyond, consider how programs like these create opportunities to serve communities where physicians can make an extraordinary impact.
