Founded in 2022, the School of Graduate Education elevates the visibility of the University of Wyoming’s advanced degree education mission and supports its broad portfolio of graduate programs and the university’s research mission. The School of Graduate Education continues the essential functions performed by the previous Office of Graduate Education (2018-2022), including strategic leadership for and oversight of all UW graduate programs, allocation of graduate teaching assistantship funding, implementation and enforcement of graduate education policies and procedures, graduate student marketing and recruitment, and advocacy and support for graduate students. The school builds upon these by raising the visibility and presence of graduate education to both internal and external stakeholders and serves as the conduit through which significant improvements to UW’s graduate education functioning will be made, including the re-establishment of the Graduate Faculty, the creation of a Graduate Student Council, and a clarification and elevation of the role of UW’s Graduate Council. Given the broad impact of the School of Graduate Education, the school’s Dean also serves as a Vice Provost in the Division of Academic Affairs. The School of Graduate Education bylaws are available here: https://www.uwyo.edu/acadaffairs/bylaws/.
The University of Wyoming offers more than 90 graduate degrees, providing a variety of subjects, the rigor of high-quality education and the depth of research you’re looking for in a master’s or Ph.D. program. UW offers a sense of belonging in a close-knit community with faculty dedicated to mentoring graduate students from the start of your program to beyond graduation. Whether you’re studying anthropology, engineering, science, getting your MBA or anything in between, you’ll also receive support services and outside-of-the-classroom opportunities you’d associate with a large university. Many of UW’s graduate programs are nationally ranked for their excellence in teaching and research, allowing our students to earn advanced degrees along with the tools and expertise they need to succeed
Upon receiving official admission to the University of Wyoming and into a specific academic program, graduate students need to connect with an academic advisor and/or department for detailed information on next steps tailored to their program. This will include instructions on confirming an intent to enroll and guidance on various aspects of the process. Alongside program-specific requirements, all admitted graduate students are required to fulfill the following next steps
Federal Financial Aid & Scholarships
Students who would like to be considered for need-based assistance must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority deadline for students entering in the fall is March 1. For more information, contact the Financial Aid office. Deadlines exist for many scholarship and financial opportunities. Students wishing to pursue graduate assistantships should do so at the time they apply for admission to their academic program. Contact your graduate program for information about applying for an assistantship.
International Graduate Student Assistantships
All international students who will serve in a graduate assistant teaching capacity at UW must successfully complete the English Oral Proficiency Exam (OPIc). Departments cannot waive this exam. Failure to pass the exam may result in the cancellation of the assistantship. Students applying to graduate programs at UW may enroll in an online test prior to coming to campus. Students completing the online exam prior to arriving on campus should submit the results along with other application materials.
Departments may require students on assistantships to pass the exam even if the student will not be teaching. International students who have obtained an advanced degree at an English language university and who have already successfully served as a teaching assistant are exempted. International students should consult with their department to learn whether teaching is a requirement of their graduate assistantship.
Graduate Student Orientation and GA Training
New graduate students are asked to attend a half-day orientation session to learn more about UW resources and academic expectations. To learn more about the orientation and upcoming dates visit the Graduate Education page. Information about the program will also be sent to admitted graduate students.
Graduate students receiving graduate assistantships are required to attend a Graduate Teaching and Learning Symposium held prior to the start of the Fall semester.
